New York Yankees 'Torpedo' bats cause controversy after 15 home runs in first 3 games: 'That means you stink!'

The New York Yankees are setting a bat trend that has some critics claiming their new wood has an unfair advantage.

The new (and legal) "Torpedo" bats, as described by Major League Baseball, have an untraditional barrel that rests closer to the hitter's hands. They have more wood, are heavier, and allegedly have increased wood concentration in the area where the batter is likely to hit the ball.

A New York baseball fan has garnered over nine million views with a post on X that showcased the bats and said the Yankees hired a physicist to procure its design.

"Yes, the Yankees have a literal genius MIT Physicist, Lenny (who is the man), on payroll," the fan wrote. "He invented the 'Torpedo' barrel. It brings more wood - and mass - to where you most often make contact as a hitter. The idea is to increase the number of 'barrels' and decrease misses."

The MLB even cited the post in an article, seemingly confirming the bat's origins.

The controversy is spiraling after the Yankees hit nine home runs in one game on Saturday, including three from star slugger Aaron Judge. The team leads the majors with 15 dingers in just three games, with the Los Angeles Dodgers in second with 12 home runs, but with five games played.

However, not only has Judge declined to use one of the new bats, not everyone around the league is convinced by the new design.

San Diego Padres outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who spent time with the Yankees across several seasons, also said he had tried the "Torpedo" bat in a previous spring training but did not like it.

"I don't think using those bats is causing all the home runs," Lockridge said about the Yankees.

Other Yankees players have explained their bat choices to ESPN, as well.

Baltimore Orioles hitting coach Cody Asche also downplayed claims that the new bats were causing the uptick in home runs.

"Where you hit the ball, put some more mass in the sweet spot — I think that’s not something that’s unique to the Yankees," Asche said. "I think a lot of teams are doing that around the league," he added.

'How do we make him not suck?'

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy said the bats, first used in the MLB in 2024, are a form of "cheating" and are meant for players with slow bat speeds.

"The Yankees hired a MIT physicist to basically take wood from the other part of the bats, like you know, the handle label, and put it in the sweet spot, making the sweet spot bigger. They did this because [Yankees shortstop] Anthony Volpe sucks, and he kept getting jammed and sawed off," Portnoy said in a video Sunday night.

"[The Yankees] were like, 'How do we make him not suck? Let's just make this, this bat called a 'Torpedo' bat, where basically if you swing and you make contact on the handle, it gets sawed off, it's a home run,'" Portnoy added. "They studied Anthony Volpe, and they found out he gets jammed on every single pitch. That means you stink. You shouldn't alter the bats to make it better."

The Barstool CEO's video, and comments that the bat should be banned, garnered a response from Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.

"This is a high school baller talking," Chisholm laughed in response to Portnoy's consistent touting of his high school baseball prowess.

Chisholm did eventually provide an explanation hours later, admitting the "barrel is bigger" but is still within regulation.

"Nobody is trying to get jammed you just move the wood from the parts you don't use to the parts you do! You're welcome no more stress for y'all," the 27-year-old stated.

— (@)

While the recent success of the Yankees — who fans love to hate — may not be specifically attributed to the "Torpedo" bats, the Atlanta Braves have reportedly bought into the hype and ordered some of their own.

ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney said during a broadcast for the Padres and the Braves that the latter had "put in an order."

"[Braves catcher] Drake Baldwin actually told me that he used one of these in the Arizona Fall League last year. He said, 'It looks weird, but if the Yankees are gonna keep hitting like that, everyone's gonna want to do it,'" Olney added.

Olney noted a similar point about the Yankees' Volpe and stated the shortstop makes his contact closer to the bat handle, adding credence to Portnoy's claims, albeit without accusing anyone of cheating or sucking.

'I'm gonna cry': Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy saves veteran-owned pizza place

It's a Christmas miracle — with all the toppings.

Thanks to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy's last-minute stop at a struggling Baltimore pizzeria, the veteran-owned shop can stay in business

Portnoy is the founder of the Barstool Sports empire but has branched off into doing his popular "one bite" pizza reviews.

'We received record numbers of sales and donations yesterday and today.'

His "One Bite Pizza Reviews" YouTube account has nearly 1.5 million subscribers and almost a billion views. There is also a popular "One Bite" app with all of his pizza review scores.

One more slice

Earlier this month, Portnoy traveled to Maryland for the Army-Navy football game.

Portnoy and his producer had been driving been in the car for about eight hours and did about 10 pizza reviews. They were ready to call it a day; however, Portnoy wanted to visit a small pizzeria in Baltimore.

One Bite Pizza Reviews producer Austin Jenkins wrote on the X, "As we were driving out of Baltimore to our hotel in D.C., Dave found TinyBrickOven on the One Bite app. He asked if it was on our way, but it wasn’t. He said let’s just do it anyways, looks like it could be good pizza to review. A One Bite Christmas Miracle."

Portnoy visited the TinyBrickOven pizzeria in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore.

TinyBrickOwner owner Will Fagg — a Navy veteran — was working when Portnoy went to pick up a pizza pie.

Fagg explained that the government was preventing him from acquiring a liquor license that could greatly benefit his business.

“We can’t get our liquor license here,” Fagg told Portnoy. “Our politicians gave this market down here their liquor license, but they won’t give us ours. ... It’s really disappointing.”

Christmas closure

He explained that his business had been struggling, which would force him to shutter his pizza joint on Christmas Day.

In a video posted to the TinyBrickOven website, Fagg says: "I must share the most devastating news of my life — TinyBrickOven is scheduled to close permanently on Christmas Day. My heart is shattered, not just for myself, but for all of us. This isn't just an end of a business, it feels like the end of a shared dream."

The TinyBrickOven website states that the company has organized fundraisers for veterans, fed the homeless, raised money for the Maryland Food Bank, and hosted a volunteer event for the staff of the Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Before tasting the pizza, Portnoy declared: "We’re gonna have to keep this place open."

Portnoy stepped out of the restaurant to do his review of the pizza. After being impressed with his slice, Portnoy went back inside the TinyBrickOven pizzeria to talk to Fagg.

An offer he couldn't refuse

Portnoy asked the pizzeria owner, "Can I ask you something? How much money do you need to stay open for like a year?"

Fagg said he wasn't sure of the exact amount to save his business.

Portnoy pressed, "Well, if there’s somebody super rich right in front of your face who’s in the pizza business, and by serendipity is like, ‘What do you need to stay open for a year,’ you’ve got to give him some figure, because then he’s going to walk away."

Fagg replied, "I know it. Listen, I think we could probably get our liquor license and continue to stay open if we had $60,000."

Without hesitation, Portnoy fired back: "Done."

'I'm gonna cry'

A gobsmacked Fagg exclaimed, "Oh, my gosh, man, this is unbelievable. Wow! I'm gonna cry."

Portnoy assured Fagg that he'll send him the money "before Christmas."

"We'll keep you open for a year," Portnoy declared.

Portnoy admitted that it cost him $60,000, but stressed: "But whatever, I'm a nice motherf***er."

Portnoy's pizza review went viral, racking up nearly 15 million views on Twitter, almost 400,000 views on YouTube, and notching 70,000 likes on Instagram.

The viral video has caused business to skyrocket for the fledgling pizzeria.

Fagg told CBS News that the TinyBrickOven had a line out the door and phones ringing off the hook on Christmas Eve.

"We've never had a crowd like this," he said.

A GoFundMe campaign for the pizzeria has raised nearly $130,000 at the time of publication.

"The very generous Barstool review basically broke the internet (our email server instantly crashed due to overwhelming email volumes)," the campaign reads. "We received record numbers of sales and donations yesterday and today."

'I have been a target of the left': Dave Portnoy explains how Democrats and leftist media lies drove him to vote for Trump

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy said the undemocratic appointment of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrats' 2024 presidential candidate was ultimately what pushed him into voting for Donald Trump.

Portnoy said that if broken down, most of his views likely lean liberal, but as Harris' positions and inability to answer questions became clear, he decided to vote for Trump.

Portnoy admitted that at one point he considered voting for Harris because he is pro-abortion but added that the Democrats not having a primary for their candidate "really drove me nuts."

The Barstool boss also told former ESPN host Sage Steele on her podcast that he found it insulting when mainstream media tried to convince the public that President Joe Biden was not in mental decline. Portnoy said his decision to vote for Trump was cemented when Harris claimed that she was involved in all of Biden's decisions yet also wanted to "turn the page" with her new administration.

Despite being registered as an independent and aligning mostly with left-wing values, Portnoy discussed frequent criticisms of him from the left that seemingly stemmed from an interview he did with Trump in 2020.

"I have been a target of the left."

"They hated me, and they'd come after me. ... Trump started doing all his interviews with all media; I was kind of the first one to do it. I did it when he was a sitting president," Portnoy continued. "People came after me. ... People just assume you're a Nazi or whatever, so I really got skewered for that."

'You hate me so much I'm going to start hating you.'

The CEO said that before his Trump interview, his Barstool Sports outlet was occasionally smeared as "sexist," but the interaction with the president "amped it up."

Portnoy said that enduring these constant attacks from liberal outlets made him "hate the left" as a natural reaction to the consistent negativity.

"You hate me so much I'm going to start hating you," the 47-year-old explained.

Portnoy's image with liberals only worsened as he began appearing on Fox News shows with personalities like Tucker Carlson. Even though he was willing to go on almost any program in order to promote his brand, Portnoy claimed he was rarely given the opportunity by left-wing media outlets to state his case.

He was able to recall at least one appearance on a liberal program: a spot on CNN with former anchor Chris Cuomo. Portnoy described the interview as "a little bit antagonistic."

He concluded that leftists seemingly want no part of real conversations, and even after years of provable lies by outlets across the board, some people are still making up their minds without doing any research.

"They don't listen to anything you say. It's just appearance, and then their mind is made up."

'Pure arrogance and moral superiority': Dave Portnoy unloads on Democrats, says Harris ran 'the worst campaign' ever

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy said Vice President Kamala Harris drove away independent voters by running a campaign based on moral superiority and name-calling.

Portnoy, who announced in September that he would be voting for Donald Trump, demolished Democrat Party brass for running the "worst" campaign he's ever seen.

"Independents or moderates ... the Democrats gave us no choice. That was the worst campaign, and the pure arrogance and moral superiority have driven people away."

Portnoy noted that the strategy of saying Trump is a threat to democracy only resulted in pushing people to his side.

"He didn't just win, he won for fun. He won the electoral, he won the popular vote, he won [by] more votes than last time," Portnoy explained.

'You are alienating all these middle-ground people.'

Furthermore, the Barstool boss pointed to the name-calling used by Democrats and their supporters, typically in the final weeks of the campaign where Trump rallies were likened to Nazi rallies.

"If you say you're voting for Trump, suddenly it's 'Nazi, you're Hitler, you're garbage.' Enough!"

Portnoy added, "You are alienating all these middle-ground people."

"He won clear, he won decisive, so when you call us that and you say that, you're calling the majority of the country racist, Nazi, Hitler."

For Harris' part, Portnoy said in his social media video that there was an obvious call for change that the vice president wasn't up to, and Harris couldn't articulate any way she was different from President Joe Biden.

The Trump campaign continuously highlighted an appearance by Harris on "The View," where she stated, "There is not a thing that comes to mind," in regard to what she would do differently from Biden.

Portnoy added that change was sorely needed to solve issues like inflation, border policy, and conflicts in the Middle East, which he said Harris did not address.

Portnoy's gripes extended to the Democratic Party as a whole, which he felt was gaslighting him by running a candidate who "can't answer any questions" and "didn't get any votes" when she ran for president.

"It's garbage," Portnoy stated.

"Democrats were the one saying Joe Biden was mentally fit for two years when he was a vegetable. He couldn't make it off stage after a speech, and the Democrats would lie to our face."

Portnoy ended his video by saying he voted for Trump because he felt he "had no choice."

The sports personality has remained consistent leading up to the election, voicing that he was worried that if Harris was elected, states like California and New York would become the norm for the rest of the country in terms of their decay.

"I wouldn't have voted for [Trump] in the Republican primaries," he revealed but said that what Democrats have done is "far worse."

‘I’m taking crazy pills’: Dave Portnoy loses his mind over Democrats' latest gaslighting

While most celebrities are championing Kamala Harris, Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports sees right through all the theater — and he can’t take it anymore.

“Every once in a while, I get so fed up with politics I’ve got to do a rant and just let steam off. I try not to, but I’ve hit the boiling point, and it’s the gaslighting that the left is doing with Kamala Harris making it sound like she’s some great groundbreaking candidate,” Portnoy began.

“She is the worst candidate ever to run for president, ever. There’s two people voting in this election. Either you’re voting for Donald Trump, you like Donald Trump, or you hate Donald Trump, and you’re voting against him,” he continued. “But Kamala Harris, let’s stop it.”

Portnoy explained that what put him “over the edge” was hearing Kamala preach “change” and a “new way forward” at one of her recent rallies.

“I see her at a rally today, and it’s the same message again. ‘Time to turn the page.’ She is the sitting vice president of the United States currently saying she’s the ‘candidate for change,’” Portnoy said in disbelief, before calling out "Call Her Daddy," "The View," and Stephen Colbert for asking her the “most simplest questions, softballs, that she probably knew were coming.”

“Hey, Kamala, how are you different from Joe Biden? What will be different since you are the sitting vice president of the United States and now you’re out saying you’re the ‘candidate for change'? She cannot answer it. She can’t answer it. She is literally saying, ‘Well, I’ve pretty much been in every big decision, I’m the same as Joe Biden.’”

“I can’t think of one thing different, it’s like I’m taking crazy pills,” he added.

Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” couldn’t agree more.

“Dave Portnoy, who wants to talk about sports, is like, ‘Jesus, look what they’re doing with this woman.’ They’re giving her the lowest-hanging fruit, it could not hang any lower. She is literally supposed to just pick the fruit up from the floor and eat it. That’s all she’s supposed to do,” Rubin says.

‘I’m voting for Trump’: Dave Portnoy RIPS Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party

Dave Portnoy, the man famous for Barstool Sports, hails from a Democratic family. However, that’s not stopping him from supporting former President Donald Trump.

“I think that what the Democrats have done is far worse than really anything Trump has done — like in terms of not allowing a primary. To me, that’s crazy,” Portnoy said in a recent stream. “I’m somebody who if I liked a candidate on the Democratic side, I could have potentially voted for that person.”

Regarding Biden’s possible mental decline, Portnoy notes that “Kamala has known that, and she just lied about it forever.”

“She never got a vote. Like, I don’t know, you can say whatever you want about Trump, he won the Republican nomination by a landslide. Fair and square. And Kamala did not,” he explains.

But that’s not his only problem with Kamala.

“Some of her past statements for me are just nutty, and I don’t like what’s happened in a lot of Democratic states,” he says. “I hope if she’s elected, like California and New York, those don’t become what happens in the United States.”

In another appearance on Fox Business, Portnoy confirmed that he’s “voting for Trump.”

“I wouldn’t have voted for him in the Republican primaries, but I’m voting for him now,” Portnoy explained.

Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” is happy to hear it.

“It all just seems so sleazy, and it’s bringing together a heck of a new coalition of people,” he says.
